I want to move HAL to a different computer.

If you want to move HAL to a different computer, then you must first unregister the software from its current location.  Follow the steps below.

  1. Use Windows® Explorer to navigate to the HAL program folder (generally located at C:\Program Files\HAL).  Copy the entire "Data" folder to another location on the computer or other media, such as a ZIP drive or CD.  The "Data" folder contains all of your settings, such as device names, scheduled events, stock names, etc.
  2. Start HAL if it's not already running.  Right-click on the ear icon and select ABOUT HAL.  The HAL About screen will appear.  
  3. Click UNREGISTER at the bottom of the screen.  The Unregister HAL Components screen will appear.
  4. Click to enable (checkmark visible) the HAL software program(s) that you want to unregister.  If you're moving HAL to a different computer then you'll want to check all the HAL software that you have installed.
  5. Click UNREGISTER.  A screen will appear listing unregistration numbers for each product.  Write these numbers down -- you'll need them when you call to re-register the software.
  6. Install the HAL software program(s) on the other hard drive or computer.  On the last installation screen, disable the option to have HAL start automatically when the installation is finished -- you'll manually start HAL later. Click FINISH when the installation is complete.
  7. On the new computer, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder where HAL was just installed (typically C:\Program Files\HAL).   Delete or overwrite the "Data" folder with the "Data" folder that you copied in Step 1.
  8. Start HAL.  The HAL Registration screens will reappear for each software product that was installed.  Call the HAL Authorization Desk to register the software on this new computer.  Explain that you have unregistered HAL so that you can move it to a different computer.  You will be asked for the unregistration numbers that you wrote down in Step 5.  The Authorization Desk will assist you with registering the software.
  9. Uninstall the HAL software from the old computer, if desired.
VERY IMPORTANT:  Do not use these steps if you are upgrading software versions or programs at the same time that you're moving the software.  If you intend to upgrade from HALbasic to HALdeluxe or HAL2000 or upgrade from HALdeluxe to HAL2000, you must first install the new software on the current computer then follow the steps above to move the upgraded software to the new computer.  Likewise, if you're going to upgrade from version 1.3.81 to version 2.x, you must first do the upgrade on the current computer then follow the steps above to move the 2.x version to the new computer.  After upgrading on the current computer, you can register the new software online.  Once you move the software to the new computer, however, you will need to re-register with the assistance of the HAL Authorization Desk.
