If you previously purchased the HAL
Internal PCI Voice Portal then there is no need to change
the modem. If, however, you are running version 1.2.19 or
earlier of HAL2000, you will need to purchase this modem to take
advantage of all the telephony features that have been added to
HAL since the release of version 1.2.19.
Why was a new modem created?
New versions of HAL (1.3.0 or later) communicate digitally with
the modem. The older compatible modems (5600 and 5601-A
analog modems, for example) could not handle the digital communication.
Although we were able to communicate with the modem digitally
and utilize the limited features they contained in these older
modems, our Quality Assurance testing determined the modem to
be too unstable for digital communication and contained poor digital
audio.
For this reason we decided to help support our existing modem
customers by providing a new full-featured quality modem at a
greatly discounted price (up to 40% off) with trade-in. To
minimize the chance of our customers experiencing this type of
problem in the future, we at HAL have invested significant time
and money in developing the HAL
PCI Voice Portal modem.
Reasons for requiring a newer modem:
-
Reliability - The older analog modem hardware
would frequently lock-up when using digital communication.
-
Audio Quality - The digital answering machine
and handset audio quality is OK for the analog modem, but
far inferior to the NEW Digital Modem.
-
Availability - To date there is a limited
number of modems which contain key features needed to take
advantage of all the features in HAL and many of the previously
supported modems (e.g. 5600 and 5601-A) are no longer available
from the modem manufacturer.
-
Flexibility - The newer modem provides greater
flexibility with digital communication and therefore provides
our users with a greater number of features. For
example: More speakerphone control including volume control,
better messaging (clearer messages and better silence detection
for messages being left so there is no longer 10 seconds
of blank space at the end of each message), complete volume
control for each speaker/mic, local telephone, and remote
telephone, faster on-hook/off-hook, etc... Just to mention
a few.
The HAL Voice Portal
modem solves ALL of these issues.
